*WOKE ALERT – Target Hits Books

Last fall, Target thrust itself into a major political controversy when it suddenly removed a pair of books skeptical of prevailing LGBT orthodoxy from its online store. Around that time, we had several interactions with Target’s Investor Relations Department in which we pressed them on what this said about the company’s corporate culture. Their answers were less than satisfactory. Nevertheless, most of us moved on after the issue was apparently resolved. Then, months later, when no one was looking, Target appears to have re-banned the previously unbanned books. Given the endless series of political controversies Woke Capital keeps throwing up, it is understandable if most people have forgotten about the entire pitiful episode.

Here is a quick refresher: Back in November 2020, Target.com had among its catalog two books that upset Twitter activists: Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier, and The End of Gender by Dr. Debra Soh. A Twitter user complained that books they did not like were being sold, prompting a rapid response from Target. Both books were removed. Naturally, this produced a political backlash, so Target Day. That appeared to be the end of the story; yes, an embarrassment for a major corporation, and a bad omen for the direction of corporate America, but the books were again available on Target’s website. Until they weren’t. Prior to attending Target’s annual meeting on June 9, we dug into the controversy again and found that Abigail Shrier had tweeted about her book being unavailable on Target.com — months after the ban was supposedly reversed.

*MURDERAPOLIS: City At Center Of George Floyd Protests Hits All-Time High Murder Record

Minnesota, where George Floyd was killed last May, set a state record for murders in 2020 after officials from across the state called for the defunding of police departments, according to new data. Last year, 185 people were killed in Minnesota, a 58% increase from 2019. The previous record of 183 homicides, set in 1995, caused Minneapolis to be dubbed “Murderapolis.” The majority of the murders occurred in St. Paul and Minneapolis, two cities that also saw a significant decrease in the number of active police officers. The Twin Cities were additionally at the heart of the nationwide “Defund the Police” movement. Initially, a majority of Minneapolis city council members pledged to fully abolish the city’s police department, but later relented after procedural challenges, deciding instead to simply cut $8 million from the department’s budget, according to The Star Tribune. Multiple St. Paul city council members also supported fully disbanding their police department, although such a drastic measure was never passed, as reported by The Twin Cities Pioneer Press.

*LAWSUIT FILED BY BLACK MOTHER AFTER SEGREGATION INSTITUTED BY WOKE ADMINISTRATORS

A lawsuit has now been filed by a black mother after her child’s woke school decided to segregate students by race. As reported, a mother in Atlanta filed a federal discrimination complaint against an elementary school, alleging the school segregated students based on race. “We’ve lost sleep like trying to figure out why would a person do this,” mother Kila Posey, who is Black, told WSB-TV. “First, it was just disbelief that I was having this conversation in 2020 with a person that looks just like me – a Black woman. It’s segregating classrooms. You cannot segregate classrooms. You can’t do it.” “My community, had they known about this, would probably be extremely upset. Not just the Black parents but also White parents,” Posey added. Posey said that the practice was put in place last year at Mary Lin Elementary School by principal Sharyn Briscoe, who is also Black. The Atlanta Public Schools claim that it investigated and took appropriate action, yet did not elaborate on exactly what this ‘appropriate action’ was.

*THE FUTURE OF GYMS IS HYBRID

It’s been a rough year-and-a-half for any place you go to for a half-hearted, 20-minute StairMaster sesh. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 22% of US health clubs have closed for good, taking 1.5 million workers with them, per the International Health Racquet & Sportsclub Association. But for the gyms that have managed to stay open through lockdowns, business is booming.

  • Planet Fitness increased revenue 241% last quarter compared to 2020, and added 700k new members.
  • Colin Waggett, the CEO of London-based luxury gym Third Space, said his clubs are seeing an all-time low on cancellations for pre-booked classes (3%).
  • Xpontential, the boutique fitness company that owns brands like Club Pilates and Pure Barre, said that revenue was only 13% below Q2 2019.

In May, when Covid capacity restrictions were lifting across the US, gym traffic returned to 83% of pre-pandemic levels. But crowded weight rooms may not last for long. The Delta variant has already pushed city governments in New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans to require vaccines for public venues, including gyms. And in some states, most recently Oregon, indoor mask mandates are coming back to make your chin even sweatier while you squat.

  • Planet Fitness CEO Chris Rondeau told CNBC this week that about 150 clubs currently require masks in accordance with local guidelines, but he hopes that the mandates are short-lived.

There’s also the existential threat posed by in-home fitness companies that exploded during the pandemic. To keep up with demand for its bikes and treads, Peloton broke ground on its first US factory in Ohio this week. And even when this current wave of Covid recedes, most data points to in-home fitness sticking around and coexisting with physical gyms.

  • 70% of online fitness program users plan to keep using them post-pandemic, per McKinsey.
  • 40% of Peloton users also have a gym membership, according to the company.

Looking ahead…in many ways, the trajectory of gyms reflects the trajectory of the physical office. Advances in tech have made in-home fitness a sweaty, convenient pleasure, but others may crave human interaction and equipment they can’t find at home.

*INFRASTRUCTURE BILL WOULD ADD $256 BILLION TO DEFICITS OVER A DECADE, CBO SAYS

The bipartisan Senate infrastructure bill would add $256 billion to budget deficits over a decade, the Congressional Budget Office estimated Thursday. The report from the nonpartisan agency did not take into account potential revenue increases created by economic growth. As it stands, the CBO said the bill, which does not include tax increases, would generate about $50 billion in revenue. Senators who crafted the plan had said it would be fully paid for through a range of sources including repurposed coronavirus relief funds, unused unemployment insurance aid and economic activity generated by the investments.

*(NOTABLE) REMARKS:

We are at a stage in this pandemic when we are trying to persuade the hold-outs – disproportionately white Republicans/evangelicals and urban African-Americans – to get vaccinated. How do we best do this? Endless, condescending nagging won’t help. Coercion is not an option in a free country. Since the vaccinated appear to be able to transmit the virus as well, vaccine passports lose their power to remove all risk. Forcing all the responsible people to go back to constraining their everyday lives for the sake of the vaccine-averse is both unfair and actually weakens the incentive to get a vaccine, because it lowers the general risk of getting it in the broader society. So, the obviously correct public policy is to let mounting sickness and rising deaths concentrate the minds of the recalcitrant. Let reality persuade the delusional and deranged. It has a pretty solid record of doing just that. —- Andrew Sullivan.

*’IT’S A VERY DANGEROUS MESSAGE’:
SCHOOL SHOWS ANTI-POLICE VIDEO TO 2ND GRADERS

A school in Virginia showed second graders an anti-police video telling children, “I feel safe when there are no police,” the Fairfax Times reported. The video was included in a summer learning guide at Bailey’s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences in Falls Church, according to the Fairfax Times. Woke Kindergarten, a group describing itself as committed to “abolitionist early education and pro-Black liberation,” created the video. The minute-long video says that all people deserve to feel safe in their bodies, schools, and community. “Why do some people feel safe with police and others don’t?” the narrator asks. The video concludes by saying it’s everyone’s job to help people “who are being treated unfairly,” while showing a picture of a Black Lives Matter protest.

The summer guidance may have also been available to students at other schools in the Fairfax County school district, Asra Nomani, a vice president at Parents Defending Education, who has three teenage children enrolled in the district, said. “The message that they’re trying to send to the second graders is exactly the mixed messages that adults are having to deal with, which is we feel unsafe out in the streets now because of the entire ‘defund the police’ movement that has led to less police presence,” Nomani said. “But now the police are being blamed for it.” “It’s a very dangerous message because there was a time when you were actually taught to go to the police, if you were lost or if you felt unsafe,” she said.

*DENVER SPENDS MORE ON HOMELESS THAN ITS STUDENTS AND POLICE:

Denver spent twice as much money on its homeless population than it did on its students and police, a Common Sense Institute August report showed. The city spent between $41,679 and $104,201 per person on its homeless population, compared to $19,202 per student in K-12 public schools in 2020, according to the report. In total it spent $481 million on healthcare, housing and other services for homeless people, over $100 million more than the Department of Public Safety’s budget. Homeless spending was also roughly double the $20,000 average annual rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Denver, according to the report. Denver’s homeless population increased by 25% between January 2017-2020, according to the report. The report did not measure the homeless population for the 2020-2021, period but did note that emergency shelter “guests” increased by 46%.

*COVID-POSITIVE MAN WHO DEVELOPED RARE DISORDER PLEADS FOR OTHERS TO GET VAXXED:

A California man said misinformation caused him to not get the COVID-19 vaccine—and now he’s in the hospital with a rare neurological disorder. “We would say, ‘That isn’t going to happen to us,’ or ‘It [COVID] isn’t real, we won’t get sick,’ and then it happened to all of us,” Saúl Torres told KCRA. It’s because of this, he says, others should get the vaccine. He contracted the virus last month, losing 40 pounds and eventually developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disease that induces the immune system to attack the body instead. Yesenia Ramos, an internal medicine resident at the University of California Davis, said Torres’ situation is an example of how Latino populations view the virus, contributing to their low vaccination rates. “Among the Latino population, there’s just a lot of myths among each other and they don’t know the truth about the vaccines and they don’t see a doctor to get educated on it,” Ramos said. She said GBS often follows a viral or bacterial infection, leading to fears it may be connected to COVID-19. Ramos said Torres may require physical therapy to fully recover.

*’SHOOTING UP ALL DAY LONG’:
NEW RECORDS REVEAL RAMPANT DRUG USE AT BRONX PARK:

Regular visitors to Patterson Playground in the Bronx have long complained about the rampant drug use there – and now they have data to show just how bad the situation is. Recently released records show that the city picked up more used syringes there than at any other Bronx playground in any month of 2019. Workers cleaned up 2,352 needles at Patterson, near P.S. 18 in the Mott Haven section, in August 2019, according to city data obtained by the MuckRock website on July 21. In all, 4,714 syringes were collected off the ground at Patterson in June, July, and August of 2019, up 24% from the same time period in 2018, when 3,792 needles got picked up, the city data says. “They’re all over the place. All over the streets. Every place you are, you find one,” said Pedro Velez, who has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years. “People over here know, so they walk very lightly. They’re very vigilant.”

*’WE GET SPIT ON. WE GET THINGS THROWN AT US’: A LOOK AT CHICAGO POLICE DEPT. RISING RETIREMENT NUMBERS:

We are tracking a growing number of Chicago police officers leaving their jobs, even without a pension. In just the first six months of this year, 367 officers retired. CBS 2 spoke to a recently retired officer who gave some insight into the rising numbers. “People see us as the enemy and we’re not. All we’re trying to do is help the people of the community, the city of Chicago.” This person, who had nearly 25 years on the job, retired within the past year from the Chicago Police Department. Retirement numbers are broken up in two ways: Those who don’t get their pension because they’re not eligible and those who do get a pension. Data obtained through public records show in 2017, 37 officers left the department before being eligible for a pension. So far this year that number is nearly double with 68 officers.

For those who are retiring with their pension, that number has been climbing steadily over the years: In 2018 there were 339 retirements. The following year in 2019, there were 475. In 2020, there were 560 retirements. And already this year: 367 just through the month of June. For this retired officer, who left the department with numerous commendations, the streets of Chicago became too much. “We get spit on. We get things thrown at us, you know, you, they’re fighting with us. People are protesting, calling us names and not just the protestors,” said the retired officer. “But you’ve got the people who are supposed to have our back in government.”

***In his State of the Union address in 1996, President Bill Clinton seemed to concede the triumph of Reaganism over liberalism and socialism: “We know big government does not have all the answers. We know there’s not a program for every problem. We have worked to give the American people a smaller, less bureaucratic government in Washington. And we have to give the American people one that lives within its means. The era of big government is over.” In 2021, Biden and his party are saying: Clinton was wrong to concede Reaganism its victory. When there is a big crisis in the country, FDR was right: Big government is the solution. If the terrain looks unfamiliar, that is because we are crossing a new continental divide. We are entering Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez country.

KETO DIETS ARE A ‘DISEASE-PROMOTING DISASTER’:

Ketogenic diets may be very fashionable right now, but a new study warns they may be doing long-term damage to your health. Researchers say that what makes these high-fat diets different from other weight loss strategies is also increasing the risk of developing a multitude of different diseases. Those include heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s disease. “The typical keto diet is a disease-promoting disaster,” says lead review author Lee Crosby, RD, nutrition education program manager at Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, in a media release. “Loading up on red meat, processed meat, and saturated fat and restricting carbohydrate-rich vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains is a recipe for bad health.” Crosby and a team from NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine, New York City Health and Hospital at Bellevue, the University of Pennsylvania, Loma Linda University, and George Washington University School of Medicine conducted what the scientists call the most comprehensive review of the keto diet to date. Their findings appear in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

A “ketogenic” diet generally refers to any weight loss plan that is very low in carbohydrates, increases protein intake, and is high in fat. You might ask, why would someone think this is a healthy diet? Well, there’s actually a scientific reason for it. Keto diets are popular because this mix of food fuel tries to trigger ketosis in the body. This process activates the production of ketones, which are an alternative energy source for the body. What makes ketones so appealing is the fact that neurons and other cells can metabolize this energy better than fatty acids. However, the new review finds the foods keto diets use to achieve this may harm the body over the long haul.

*BORER DISASTER! –  NUMBER OF MIGRANTS STOPPED AT THE U.S. – MEXICO BORDER IN JULY IS THE HIGHEST IN 20 YEARS:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents recorded around 210,000 “encounters” with migrants along the southwest border in July, the highest monthly figure in two decades, a senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official said in a court filing on Monday. Of those stopped at the border, more than 19,000 were unaccompanied minors – a record number – while another 80,000 were family units traveling together, according to David Shahoulian, assistant secretary for border and immigration policy at the DHS.

*PORTLAND POLICE CAN’T FIND RECRUITS FOR REVIVED GUN VIOLENCE DIVISION:

As Portland’s homicide rate climbs from historic lows, a special police division within the department dedicated to combatting gun violence is having a hard time finding recruits. The Gun Violence Reduction Team, which the City Council voted to disband last year amid social justice protests and criticisms that it disproportionately targeted people of color, has been reborn and rebranded as the Focused Initiative Team. The new unit aims to reduce violent crime while working with a citizen-advisory board comprised of eleven community members to “identify and dismantle institutional and systemic racism in the bureau’s responses to gun violence.” Democratic Mayor Ted Wheeler unveiled the team in March, and said the community-driven committee would be responsible for overseeing its direction.

Out of 14 vacancies on the task force, only four police personnel indicated willingness to join, suggesting low confidence in the department’s practices among officers. Some hesitance, it seems, also stems from fear of negative public reputation which the unit has generated in recent months. Jami Resch, assistant chief of the Portland Police Bureau’s investigations branch, confirmed to the Journal that officers are reluctant to apply given the backlash against the old version and the still ambiguous collaboration with the oversight board. But she believes interest will pick up once its scope is solidified. “They’re demonizing and vilifying you, and then they want to put you in a unit where you’re under an even bigger microscope,” Daryl Turner, leader of the union that represents Portland’s officers, told the Journal.

Due to his age, hearings for the unnamed man will last between 2 and 2-1/2 hours a day. His charges relate to the three years he served as a prison guard, from 1942-45; some 20,000 people were murdered at the facility.

During his remarks, Abbasi claimed that Israel was a “colonial project” and concluded with “good news” for his fellow Muslims. “I don’t want to leave you depressed, I want to give you the good news now. With the help of Allah, they [the Muslims] will erase this filth called Israel,” he said at the end of the speech.

*GOVERNMENT AGENCY WASTED $143 BILLION ON MEDICAID OVERPAYMENTS IN 2019-2020:

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) wasted $143 billion on Medicaid overpayments during the last two years, and it hasn’t been transparent about its efforts to recover those funds. CMS reported $57.36 billion and $86.49 billion in Medicaid overpayments in the fiscal years 2019 and 2020, respectively. The improper payment rates of 14.9% and 21.36%, respectively, represent a substantial jump from prior years, and CMS is required by the Social Security Act to recover improper payments that exceed three percent.

Americans for Prosperity Foundation (AFPF), a conservative nonprofit which seeks to advance economic freedom and promote limited government, filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request on May 5 asking CMS what efforts it had made to recover the overspent money, data on improper payment rates by state and internal communications within the agency regarding the issue. CMS did not answer the FOIA request, and AFPF and is now suing CMS in response. “I have not been able to identify a bigger number historically, nor a more rapid surge. It’s the mother of all government waste statistics,” Americans for Prosperity senior health fellow Dean Clancy told the Daily Caller. “$143 billion is enough to cover another 24 million low-income adults, or another 7.2 million disabled people, for a full year.”

In 2016 it was 53 percent. In 2018, the latest year encompassed by the study it dropped to 49.6 percent. Previous studies by other organizations showed the percentage of giving households in the late 1980s at 74 percent.
